Signs of a Failing Turbocharger
A worn turbo rarely fails without warning. Catch these symptoms early and you may save the engine too.

Loss of power and slow boost
The engine feels flat, takes longer to build boost or drops into limp mode with an underboost code such as P0299.
Blue or gray exhaust smoke
Worn turbo seals let engine oil into the intake or exhaust, where it burns, most often on startup or under boost.
Siren or whining noise
A loud whine or siren that rises with engine speed points to damaged compressor blades or worn bearings.
Rising oil consumption
If the oil level drops between changes with no external leak, the turbo may be passing oil.
Oil in the intake piping
A light film is normal. Pooled oil in the intercooler or pipes signals failing seals.

Why Buy Your Used Turbocharger From Us
Turbos are built for one engine family, and small differences in the housing, actuator or oil lines stop a near match from fitting. Our process is built to get it right the first time.
Matched by engine code and part number
We check the part number on your old turbo against your VIN and engine code before quoting, so the flanges, actuator and oil and coolant lines line up.
See your turbocharger before it ships
After you order, the supplier photographs the actual turbocharger once it is pulled. Nothing ships until you approve those photos.
Install advice that protects the turbo
Most repeat turbo failures come from oil starvation. We remind every buyer to replace the oil feed line, change the oil and filter, and prime the turbo before first start.
30-day parts warranty
Every used turbocharger includes a 30-day parts warranty. If it arrives damaged or incorrect, we replace it or refund you.

Used Turbocharger Buying Guide
Know which part you need before you buy.
| Type | How it works | Common on | What to match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single turbocharger | One exhaust-driven turbine feeds every cylinder | Most turbo four and six cylinder gas engines | Engine code, part number and actuator type |
| Twin turbo or variable geometry | Two turbos, or movable vanes, widen the boost range | V6 and V8 gas engines and most modern diesels | Left or right position, part number and electronic actuator |
| Supercharger | A belt-driven compressor makes boost from idle | Performance V6 and V8 engines | Engine code, pulley size and part number |

Used Turbocharger FAQs
Where can I buy a used turbocharger online?
You can request a used turbocharger quote from FirstChoice Used Auto Parts online or by calling 1-888-383-2439, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM EST. Send a request anytime and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We are based in Louisville, Kentucky, match every turbocharger to your VIN, engine code and part number, and ship across the United States.
How much does a used turbocharger cost?
Used turbocharger prices vary with the vehicle, engine, single or twin setup, electronic or vacuum actuator and availability. A used OEM turbocharger usually costs up to 70% less than a new one from a dealer, and you get 10% off when you order by phone. The fastest way to an exact price is a free quote using your VIN.
What are the signs of a bad turbocharger?
Look for loss of power, slow boost, blue or gray exhaust smoke, a siren-like whine, rising oil consumption and underboost codes such as P0299. Boost leaks and stuck wastegates cause similar symptoms, so have the system pressure tested before you replace the turbo.
How do I find the right turbocharger for my engine?
Use the OEM part number on the turbo’s ID tag together with your VIN and engine code. The same model can use different turbos by year, engine and emissions package, so we confirm all three before quoting.
What should be replaced when installing a used turbo?
Replace the oil feed line, and the drain line if it is restricted. Change the oil and filter, fit new gaskets, and clean or replace the intercooler and pipes if the old turbo failed and sent debris or oil through them. Prime the turbo with oil before first start.
What is the difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger?
A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas, so it adds power with little fuel penalty but needs a moment to build boost. A supercharger is driven by a belt from the engine, so boost is instant but it takes some engine power to run.
Can I drive with a failing turbo?
It is risky. A turbo that is passing oil can foul the catalytic converter or, on a diesel, cause the engine to run away on its own oil. If the shaft breaks, metal can enter the engine. Park the vehicle and fix it soon.
Do your used turbochargers come with a warranty?
Yes. Every used turbocharger comes with a 30-day parts-only warranty. Labor costs are not covered. Full terms are in our warranty policy.
Do you ship used turbochargers across the United States?
Yes. Turbochargers ship by parcel carrier to the billing address on your card, with tracking details emailed within 2 days of shipment. See the shipping policy for details.
